c. 1972, gouache on board, 38cm x 50cm
Cover illustration for the Penguin paperback of Richard Condon’s eighth novel, a tale of American gangsterism. While Condon’s works were usually marketed as thrillers they were written as political satires and this savage indictment of America is no exception. The photo-realistic technique deployed by Coppola for the cover illustration references Condon’s success as a scriptwriter. Five of his novels were made into films.
The artwork is sold with an original Mile High paperback that features the Coppola illustration.
