D’Achille represents the legendary Italian actor Marcello Mastroianni in this piece, setting him in London. The green tint to the background figures, and Mastroianni's brooding features, suggest jealousy or concealed anger in contrast to the innocence of the brightly clothed girl in the foreground.

The original painting art board is approximately 76 cm wide x 54 cm tall.

Brian Sanders was commissioned by Stanley Kubrick to record the film being made and spent a year drawing and painting in Stage H at Shepperton Studios, England. 

The drawing shows actor Gary Lockwood who played astronaut Frank Poole as he  exercises in the centrifuge set. The rotation of the set was designed to create the impression that the crew were walking around the space craft in zero gravity. 

2001: A Space Odyssey production designer Harry Lange had previously worked at NASA with Wernher von Braun and as a result the designs he created for the film required security clearance by NASA.  Designs similar to Lange's work would appear in actual NASA space missions over the following decades. The production design, the realistic light and dark of space and the slow movement of action in the film helped establish it as touchstone for most if not all 'space' films that were to follow over the coming decades.

The drawing shows the film crew at work preparing the innovative rolling camera rig used to film inside the rotating centrifuge. The huge rotating set was designed to create the impression that the crew were walking around the space craft in zero gravity.

An early commission for short-lived London agency Dyad Marketing. Johnson interpreted the brief ‘Girl with a Gun’ using photographs in a sequence of poses arranged like a moving image. Influenced by American illustrators who were showing their work in art galleries, Johnson created this at a scale suitable for a gallery setting.

Coppola was commissioned by legendary Penguin art director Germano Facetti and under his guidance was inspired to create a series of ground breaking covers. 

The translation of Simone de Beauvoir’s 1943 novel L’Invitee was published in the U.K. by Penguin in 1966.  Coppola’s vibrant use of collage juxtaposed with careful, detailed line work gives the book contemporary styling for a new audience. The original painting art board is approximately 22 cm wide x 27 cm tall.

Coppola was commissioned by legendary Penguin art director Germano Facetti and under his guidance was inspired to create a series of ground breaking covers. 

A Perry Mason novel written by Erle Stanley Gardner in 1949, reprinted in 1966 by Penguin, gets the same modernist approach as Coppola’s covers for literary novels. The democratising effect of abstracting pulp imagery elevates a pulp-fiction novel, just as it makes the high-brow more accessible.

The original painting art board is approximately 27 cm wide x 40 cm tall.

Kubrick rehearsing actors in the Moon Pit scene.  The futuristic sensor and camera shown in the foreground is a key prop.  Sanders’ perspective allows the prop to dominate the humans in this drawing.  A subtle reference to the central themes of the film.

This illustration was commissioned for a serialised story in a woman’s magazine. Unlike his contemporaries, Wyles worked in watercolour, working from the magazine’s art direction and reference photography.  He achieved astonishing accuracy, the only clue to his medium being the way details beyond the focus points appear to melt away. The original painting art board is approximately 30 cm wide x 41 cm tall.

Commissioned to illustrate a crime story in the German magazine, Bunte, Johnson hasn’t encapsulated the narrative with a single scene, as he would usually.  Instead, he has lifted a number of motifs from the story and assembled them like pieces of evidence. Johnson himself appears in the illustration as the photographer.

Johnson occasionally drove Lotus cars competitively was a huge admirer of John Surtees. In this painting, Surtees can be seen sitting in the cockpit of Jim Hall’s 1969 Chaparral 2H whilst Hall stands alongside beside one of his mechanics. Surtees raced this innovative car during the 1969 Can-Am season.  

Surtees was a four-time 500cc motorcycle World Champion (1956, 1958, 1959 & 1960) and Formula One World Champion in 1964. He remains the only person to have won World Championships on both two and four wheels.

The Fourth Postman was originally written by Craig Rice in 1948, though this image was never used as a cover for later editions of the book. Laid thick with reds, the clever use of a cool highlight on the gun brings it out of hiding. Note also the apparent smears on the gunmetal, picked up almost effortlessly in breaks in the highlighting colour.

The original painting art board is approximately 40 cm wide x 55 cm tall. The artwork is float mounted on to conservation grade mountboard and presented in a white wooden box frame glazed with anti-reflective glass.

Coppola applies his modernist approach to the pulp novel and, inspired by legendary art director Germano Facetti, elevates it to sit easily alongside Penguin’s classic literary fiction. The montage of jarring, mismatched imagery, creates an uneasy composition which has much in common with fine-art abstraction.

This is for a six-part serialization of Paul Gallico’s novel Mrs. 'Arris Goes to Paris for a popular women’s magazine.  Before the advent of full colour television in 1969 women’s magazines were enormously popular in the UK.   A magazine like Woman, would sell three and a half million copies a week.  Their influential art directors competed to hire the freshest illustration talent of the time to illustrate all manner of content including exceptional short stories and serialisations.

Glendon Swarthout’s self-confessed ‘big book’ about a little town in Michigan was published in 1962. Though a more melodramatic image was eventually used for the cover, this version by Fratini uses introspective figures and symbols of authority set against a burning yellow background to imply violent secrets lurking below the town’s composed surface. The original painting art board is approximately 40 cm wide x 55 cm tall.
