Within the archive of the late celebrated Italian illustrator Didi Coppola is some of his most exciting and experimental 1960s book cover artwork produced in London for Germano Facetti, the legendary art director of Penguin Books from 1962 to 1971. Facetti revitalised the Penguin brand by introducing modern graphic design standards and guidelines to reinforce the brand's distinctive visual identity.
Using some of the most talented artists available he achieved a consistently high standard of cover design at Penguin books. He encouraged Coppola to move away from traditional realistic illustration towards a more innovative techniques which combined gouache, acrylic, pencil and collage.
