Coppola was commissioned by legendary Penguin art director Germano Facetti and under his guidance was inspired to create a series of ground breaking covers.
The novel, written by Simone De Beauvoir in 1945, chronicles the lives of several Parisians in the lead up to the Second World War. Coppola’s 1966 cover for Penguin captures the book’s existential themes with precise, black line work on stark, primary colour.
